A Youth Programs Manager (YPM) at ALA is responsible for planning, coordination, team recruitment and delivery of key ALA’s signature hosted programs – The Global Scholars Program (short holiday programs), School Visits program (hosting international school groups), or Custom Programs we may be required to run for global partners. He/She will also co-design interactive programs allocated to them under the guidance of the Dean of Global programs. The YPM will provide outstanding, transformational educational and recreational experiences for participants that focus on ALA core values (Integrity, Compassion, Curiosity, Diversity, Humility, Excellence) and its Pillars of Entrepreneurial Leadership (Self, Others, Africa, BUILD, Communicate, and Practice).

Roles and responsibilities

School Visits Program

Schedule, plan and ensure quality implementation of all aspects of in-coming middle and high school visits to ALA, from one-day to multi-week programs; including budgeting/financial management, on- and off-campus logistics, programming, and debriefs/evaluation. This requires on-campus overnights for most visits.
Design, coordinate and facilitate BUILD workshops and other special programs
Coordinate and oversee the ALA “Chommie” (Buddy) Program, including training, supporting and evaluating student chomies.
Maintain consistent, responsive and positive communications with visiting school representatives through all phases of engagement
Global Scholars Program / Holiday Programs Season

Schedule, plan and ensure quality implementation of our holiday season of leadership camps.
Coordinate the recruitment of guest educators, alumni and interns to capably run the holiday season.

 

 
Co-design and implement community service and cultural experiences.
Manage and oversee the delivery logistics of each session, including arrivals and departures, ensuring safety and security of all participants along with other ALA functions (security team; hospitality team; community out-reach team; educator training team etc.)
Oversee and ensure regular and quality communication with parents.
Provide regular reports on program quality, budgets and expenditure.
General

Create a program budget for any hosted program and track expenses.
Use ALA’s systems for student and family records, communication, billing and collection.
Understand and follow all policies and expectations around risk management and chaperoning students
Provide the Marketing & Communications team with regular and timely photographs and text for social media.
Provide reports to the Dean of Global programs on any program’s planning or execution status.
Support and work effectively with other Global Programs, including Model African Union (MAU), Catalyst Term, and Custom camps.
All other duties as requested by the Dean of Global programs
Profile of Ideal Candidate
Leadership experience in educational programming for teens (e.g., summer camp, after-school programs, outdoor/adventure programs)
Completion of an undergraduate degree
Strong organizational and logistics skills
Passionate about youth development, Africa, global citizenship, entrepreneurship, and/or leadership
You are strong in Microsoft Office applications and/or other productivity software
You work well under pressure and thrive on bringing tasks to completion
You maintain strong organizational, logistics, and communication skills
You are flexible and adapt easily to changing circumstances
You work well within a team environment
Must have a car with South African or international driver’s license”
You have experience leading camps, youth programs or other related activities
Must have the physical ability to lead and participate in activities which include, but are not limited to, camping, hiking/trekking, swimming, bicycle riding, horseback riding, wildlife research, team-building initiatives, and physical games.
First-Aid trained or certified, preferred
Reports to: Dean, Global Programs

Location: ALA Campus, Honeydew, Johannesburg

Start Date: As soon as possible
