Position Purpose :To assist the Train Driver inthe movement of the train andto convey information to theclient centre and route toenhance the safe, fastmovement of commodities.Position outputs :Obtain and place equipment ontrain (±15kg)

Check and supplementprescribed equipment i.e.pantograph hook stick (± 5kg),jumper cables (± 10kg), etc.Coupled locomotive (multipleset) through air and vacuumhoses, jumper cable andensure correct functioning ofautomatic coupler betweenlocomotives

Dispatch locomotives,operating hand operated points

Attached and/or detachvehicles according to worksorder in absence of yardpersonnel (Equivalent of 45kg)

Mount telemeters (wherenecessary) i.e. mount (frontunit = 5.17kg) (rear unit =8.06kg)

Remove and carry trainindicators to last vehicle andmount (side and rearindicators) (± 10kg), requiredto board vehicle to effectproper mountingExamining of train asprescribed ASSISTANCE ANDROUTEVerbal exchange of signalpositionsObserve proceeding trains

Patrol locomotives (walkingthrough corridors of electriclocomotives using extended foot plate and hand rails atspeeds up to 40km/h; walkingon running board of diesellocomotives and stepping overto another locomotive atspeeds up to 40km/h; manualoperating of circuit breakerswhile locomotive is in motion)

Protect train during incidents,accidents, etc.Be prepared to walk relatively long distances to check trainloads (day and night)

Determine status of train,placing and securingdetonators on rail, displayinghand signals day and night,walking on uneven ground,ability to withstand naturalelements

Assistant to Train Driverduring emergencies (in eventof Driver failure to bring trainto standstill; walking longdistances to report positions,and requirements)

Attach/detach trucks as perworks-order (manualapplication of equipment;standing of vehicle walkingalongside moving vehicles)

Obtain radios/handsets/twoway communication radios/telemeters when applicable(carrying of communicationequipment and place onfootplate or mount on vehicle)

Shunting movements Stabletrain/locomotive

Assist the Train Driver by applying hand brake

Secure as prescribed (applyinghand brakes and placing onscotch blocks in front wheels)

Store tools and equipment(remove kit-box fromlocomotive and store away)

Qualifications & Experience :Grade 12 with MathematicsAt least 1.6 metres tall

Visual acuity

Physically able to lift andcarry objects (be prepared tobe subjected to assessment ofphysical abilities)

Competencies : KnowledgeApplications must have thepotential and attributesnecessary to be trained toefficiently and safety performthe task of a Train Assistantand to be trained as a Train Driver.
