Purpose of the Position:

To oversee the overall media buying strategies and execution across the Multichoice Business to align with commercial objectives. The Media Manager focuses on developing, prioritizing and leading new media and marketing initiatives as well, as providing high quality support to local and regional business teams to plan and buy media and interpret media research results. The role holder improves the effectiveness and efficiency of the multi-media investment and co-ordinates development of proven and new media channels.
The role holder, externally, interacts with the Media agencies, and media directly.

The position works closely with in country marketing teams to help define and leverage the brands, the story and execute a clear media strategy into an effective plan in all MAL territories for both GOtv and DStv brands

This role will lead the engagement on all things brand in MAL with agencies in CORP and in-country and define/ manage the strategic roadmap on how we grow consideration, advocacy and governance of media strategies across the foot print.



Key Performance Objectives
Tasks

Establish the new way of operating in the advertising media space across all MAL territories

Identify and manage media opportunities to drive the business forward
Implement media research projects in alignment with Marketing Team using global standard and consistent methodologies
Effectively test media models in markets.

Establish a Yearly Media Strategy and assist with the implementation plans for all countries
Ensure that the transition from the current media buying in isolation to a Pan African model is done smoothly.
Develop, prioritize and lead new media and marketing initiatives to achieve the objective of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of media efforts

Ensuring Media as a function is a driver and contributes to brand and company growth.

Align with the Head of Marketing on the long range financial objectives and strategic initiatives
Control of spending vs. plans and maintain stable media ROI
Ensure that global best practice methodologies and standards are followed in all countries and results reported back to the region according to business priorities
Maintain up to date knowledge of media trends
Analyze competitor media strategies to improve brand(s) campaign effectiveness and competitiveness


Raising the level of knowledge in the regional category group on media in general.

Support the marketing teams in development of effective media campaigns.
Develop and train the country marketing teams media skill base
Identify and share media best demonstrated practices and learning within the teams
Track, plan, estimate and monitor regional media budget in conjunction with the Marketing team
Interpret media research results, contributing to practical action plans following findings
Educate Finance and Legal on media fundamentals and deals
Formulate media buy-ins, channel deals and contracts with Legal function.
Ensure regional media reports and spends are integrated within the marketing reports

People Management
Manage team members to ensure effective delivery of business unit objectives.
Develop a high performing team by embedding formal performance development and informal coaching. Encourage frequent knowledge sharing between team members.
Determine and analyse development needs for the team and ensure that identified training requirements are budgeted for and executed.
Interview and recruit new members of the team, including determining appropriate compensation levels with input from HR
Create effective workforce and recruitment demand plans to ensure that current and future business requirements can be met.
Review and update the departmentโ€™s organisation structure and role description on at least an annual basis to ensure that they are fit for purpose and contain all the accountabilities of each team member.
Approve leave requests for team members and create leave plan to ensure adequate coverage.
When required, initiate disciplinary processes for team members calling on support from HR when required.
Resolve grievances raised by team members and escalate only if required.
Address poor performance of any team member through the formal Performance Improvement programme and ensure that continued poor performance is appropriately dealt with.
Motivate team members and ensure that their efforts are recognised.

Qualifications
Marketing or business degree



Experience
10+ years related experience in brand, marketing, media and related functions
Previous experience working as a brand and/or media manager ideally within a similar industry
Experience of the full marketing mix is essential
Strong Media agency background extensive experience working with media/advertising agencies
5+ years leadership experience
Experience in managing and executing through large teams of people across multiple countries


Technical Competencies (List the key technical competencies)
Familiarity with the latest media trends, technologies and methodologies
Comfort with managing large customer base and delivering in large matrix organizations
Creative expert with track record of launching and creating great media campaigns
Experience managing internal and external promotions department teams and agencies

The ability to influence staff on a 360 basis both up and down the organisation is essential
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
